I was talking about potentially dropping down to the half marathon, and worrying about how ready I was to do a 26.2. And after speaking to - he told me I needed to stop the negative talk and be ALL IN for the marathon, if i started thinking that I couldn’t do it, then I probably wouldn’t be able to do it.

So I’m changing that attitude and giving the Malawi @impactmarathon my best tomorrow - although the time on the clock is irrelevant, it’s all about the experience!

Why do you race?

I recently had a brainstorming session with @letsdothis.com_ and we went around the table talking about our reasons for racing. Some of them talked about turning up to try to win events (Ha, I wish!) but it did get me thinking about why I sign up to so many races...

It can be overwhelming to train for a marathon, or begin a weights regime in the gym, or turn up at a fitness class for the first time. But if you break it down into 1 mile or 1 exercise, and you just start, it turns out it’s not so bad.

The first run is the hardest. Walking into the weights room alone is tough, however next time it’s a little easier.

Mental health issues aren’t always visible. They can be quiet ninjas that steal happiness, that gnaw away at your self-esteem, changing the chemical balance in your brain.

I had a bad day yesterday, mentally. After being sent some not so nice words about myself (‘she has zero visible muscle tone. All she needs is a gym. It’s called effort’ amongst others) I let it get to me. I don’t know the people who said this about me, and they don’t know me. But I played these words over and over, letting them knock my confidence in my body, and my BQ attempt this summer at a time when my anxiety is already giving me a rough time. However, letting those words in was actually a good reminder this #mentalhealthawareness week that we should be kind, no matter what, because we just don’t know what other people are dealing with or how much your nice comment/deed could mean for them on a tough day. #anxiety #mentalhealth #bekind

Early morning runs at this time of year are my absolute favourite. The morning light, the stillness of the water and the peacefulness of the surroundings.

I've been feeling so tired at the moment possibly due to anxiety insomnia waking me at 5am daily - although at least it makes it easier to get up for those 6am runs! However, to combat the tiredness Im trying hard to go to bed early, eat plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables, take my @spatoneuk iron supplements and generally giving myself a break before training for Big Cottonwood starts properly on the 28th May!

And I'm not just going to be taking liquid iron, I'm going to be pumping iron! Excited to announce that @tashi_skervinclarke and I are going to be sharing 12 weeks worth of FREE 30/40 minute strength workouts designed specifically for runners. They'll include a mix of gym, at home and body weight workouts that I'll be doing while I'm training for my BQ. Let us know if you guys have any special requests...

💪🏻 Running, obviously the priority. I’m going to be running 4-5 days a week. Taking the easy runs EASY and working hard for those key workouts.

Hands up my early morning runners. 🙋🏻‍♀️Hands up the runners who fit their training into their life, who make sacrifices to get it done.🙋🏻‍♀️

The reality for most of us is that running is not our job. We can't run when we want, we have to make our workouts fit our lives rather than the other way round. We get up early to run before work or before our weekend plans. We squeeze in a lunchtime gym session. We have big goals and we make them a priority.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Did you know that as endurance runners we should be getting 9-10 hours of sleep a night, particularly after hard/long workouts. HA! But seriously, do not underestimate the importance of rest, recovery and sleep as part of your training. Listening to your body, and knowing when to skip a run or strength session is a skill and comes with experience. Remember that stress + rest = growth is a key training factor, and one that we shouldn't ignore. And it's not only good for your physical strength, but your mental health and wellbeing too.

Sunday reminded me how incredible the running community is, fully getting behind each and every runner to help them cross the London marathon finish line.

Personally, I lost count of the number of times people cheered my name or shouted 'go pacer' from the crowds. Each acknowledgment gave me a little boost and helped power me home, despite the heat, within my target time! I have been overwhelmed by the messages on instagram thanking me for pacing, telling me they saw me on the course or heard my words of encouragement.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
It reinforced how awesome it is to be part of something bigger. To motivate and encourage runners of all ability, whether it was their first marathon or their 152nd (someone in my group at the start whipped out this awesome stat!).

I posted the other day about running feeling a bit lonely sometimes, especially in an area where I don't know many people. That's why I'm so excited to expand my local running community by using the soon-to-launch Runmates app.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
At the expo, I had the chance to chat with the team at Runmates, a new app that allows you to make friends on the run. The app aims to motivate and connect like-minded runners in the social community by linking up local runners. You post your distance/pace and run location, and put it out there to see if anyone wants to join you...pretty great, huh?

There is no substitute for hard work.

During yesterday’s F45 class, I
had the option to go for the scaled down version of the exercises, using the marathon as an excuse. But I chose not to. I pushed through, I worked harder. With the help of @spatoneUK #LiquidIron I am pledging to get to the start line of the marathon in September the strongest, fittest and speediest I’ve ever been.

If you want something you’ve
never had before, you have to do something you’ve never done before. For me, it’s changing things with my training to be better, faster than ever before. Looking at what went well for my Tokyo Marathon PB and what didn’t go so well.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
What went well… I ran consistently, completed my long runs and didn’t clock watch too much on race day. I just let my legs dictate the pace! What didn’t go well… life got in the way of strength, conditioning and recovery. I lost confidence in my fitness and my ability. That’s why feeling in my best shape is so important to me during this training cycle.

For my BQ attempt, (a Boston
Qualifier, for me that’s a sub 3.35 - realistically closer to 3.30), I’m using liquid iron to help keep me energized and support my immune system healthy. I am so motivated to work hard for the next few months, this is going to be my race! http://www.boots.com/spatone-iron

From running my very first marathon back in 2012 in 4.54 to pacing the London Marathon as the 4.45 pacer on Sunday. Expectation vs reality.... I’m getting a lot of messages from people who are disappointed with their times from the London Marathon. Please don’t be!

Be proud that you finished. Be proud that you fought for that medal, that you listened to your body and not your watch.

Its a good thing to finish with a fire to do better next time. That’s how I felt after my first marathon in 2012. I crossed the finish line in 4.54 and thought, I bet I could run that faster...and so my marathon journey began.

How long does it take you post marathon to want to run another?

Yesterday I was thinking about how nice it would be to spectate or volunteer at the marathon next year instead of running it. TODAY I’m so excited for my BQ attempt to fully start in May!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
No marathon is easy and although I was running at an easy pace for me, I still felt the effects of the heat, the backpack and the miles! It reminded me to respect the distance and be proud of that medal!

Took the dogs for a 3 mile jog through Hyde Park this morning (the family I nanny for have 2 🐶) It was essentially intervals that involved stopping for bathroom breaks (them, not me 🙈), lots of abrupt changes of direction when they smelt something interesting and a well earned coffee for me at the end! Watching Des cross the finish in first place at the Boston Marathon yesterday I felt all the emotions (yes I cried on the train watching her win). It was an extra kick of motivation to earn my spot at the Boston Marathon start line by running a BQ. After feeling burned out since Tokyo, that fire is BACK. And hotter than ever.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
This was Des' first big win, on a tough course in brutal conditions, and she smashed it. She came back from missing out on winning in Boston in 2011 (by 2 seconds), and felt burned out after finishing fourth last year. She said at the time' I feel like I would rather try to shake things up and fail miserably, but at least try, than just keep doing the same thing and getting the same result.'

So, with Des words floating round my head, I've decided that this training cycle will be different, it's going to be about embracing the sweat, the hard work, the pain. Prioritising the strength and the stretching that often fall to the wayside, because this time will be different. I am going to be stronger, faster, fitter and more determined than before.

I spent last week working on intensive care. I had been warned that at a major trauma ICU there can be a lot of people on the ward with mental health issues, and that it might be triggering for me after losing one of my best friends to depression. What I wasn’t prepared for was how much I loved working with the critical care patients, doing my best to make them comfortable and help with their long road to recovery (in whatever form that took).

I felt useful and helpful. I felt like it all clicked for me up there, making up feeding regimes for patients that were sedated and ventilated and would otherwise become malnourished. Nutrition is SO important to their progress. ICU was intense but I feel like it played on my strengths (and was helped by an amazing supervisor). 4 weeks left of placement...I’m going to miss this place! #rdtobe #dietitian #dieteticsplacement #scrubs #ICU

I ran the Boston Marathon last year thanks to @adidasrunning, they helped me achieve my goal of running all 6 Marathon Majors before I turn 30.

But I still feel like I have to earn that Boston Bib by running a BQ (a sub 3.35 for my age group) and head back to Hopkinton with that bib pinned proudly.

I knocked 5 mins off my PB in Tokyo, and I still have another 10 mins to cut down...but I’m putting it out there- I’m going to train my ass off this summer and give my BQ another attempt in September @runrevel Big Cottonwood! Link in bio to find out more...

1 Week to go until the LONDON MARATHON! I’m headed out for a last ‘long’ run, practicing pacing before official pace duties next weekend.

👉🏻 Get plenty of sleep and rest. It’s not just the night before the race that’s important. Try to maximize those 😴

👉🏻Prepare all your kit ahead of race day. Make sure you have all your gels, bib, fully charged watch etc! Visit the expo (and probably spend a little too much ££ on ‘essential’ kit!

👉🏻 Carb loading isn’t an excuse to eat all the doughnuts. Try to eat filling, nourishing meals, with a good mix of carbs, protein and fat!

Running can be a lonely sport, especially marathon training. The early nights and the early mornings, the long distances and the dedication that not everyone understands.

I read an article yesterday in the @eveningstandardmagazine about loneliness being when you think you don’t have enough friends or not enough of the right friends. This made sense to me, as although I feel incredibly lucky to have lots of friends from school and uni, not many of my friends run, and I literally have 1 running buddy where we live. Intact we only know 3 people in the Henley area 😕which can feel pretty lonely.

One of my goals this year is to put myself out there more, join a local running club and try to make more friends in the area (especially those that might be willing to join me on long runs!!) And also to make an effort to commit to more group sessions like the awesome @dash_teamlondon speed running session on weds night.

I wanted to share this because loneliness is apparently something experienced by 55% of Londoners, it’s the loneliest city in the world. I had quite a few people comment or message me about my post yesterday running with @khyatipatel_ and how they wished they had running friends. And this is my push to you guys and myself to get out there and meet other runners, join a group, try a run club, reach out to someone on Instagram! HAPPY FRIDAY!! 😘

I think I’ve been feeling burned out since the Tokyo Marathon combined with placement. Making the decision not to race the Paris Marathon took an unbelievable weight off my shoulders and I’m feeling excited and happy to be running without a proper plan for a couple of weeks.

Reflection. It’s something that I have learned to appreciate (and actually enjoy) as part of my placement where I literally have to write up daily reflections! As part of my partnership with @spatoneUK I have been thinking about what I could have done differently in this training cycle, in particular looking after my mental health better and focusing on building mental strength to run a PB.

I did the best I could in the build up to Tokyo and Paris and I’m proud of both races for different reasons. But you guys know I still want to push myself and run a BQ...and that means working on weaknesses and learning from this training cycle. For me, maybe that will be running less, doing more yoga and strength, prioritizing sleep and nutrition.

Yesterday wasn’t about my race, it was about having fun and being there to help @lowri.brown finish her marathon. She battled through, didn’t hit me when I told her she had to keep running and couldn’t walk again, and although she finished saying she’d never run a marathon again, 3 hours later she was talking about running the New York Marathon in 2019! That’s a win in my book!
