Throwback Thursday: to earning my @wmmajors Six Star Finishers medal and a 5 min+ PB at the Tokyo Marathon. After 3.5 years of pushing for a PB, this was the validation that hard work and consistency does eventually pay off.

I kept to my 2 workouts a week plan but added in more mileage and easy runs. I relaxed on race day and it worked. EASY. I’m running faster than ever and slower than ever before. My easy runs are easier than I would have dreamed to run a few years ago, and currently they’re 4 mins running 9.30+ pace and 1 min walking. Even in the heat with some hills yesterday, it truly was a recovery run.

#transformationtuesday 5 minutes...it isn’t a lot over 4 years but far more has changed in me as a runner than knocking 5 mins off my marathon PB.

That 3.49 in Berlin was everything I had. The race was hard from start to finish, I pushed from the gun and had to mentally battle to the end.

The 3.44 in Tokyo was a relaxed start, not focusing on my watch until I was halfway through. Seeing 7.XX on the watch and still running ‘easy’ was amazing. It made me see how far I’ve come and how much more I can do...

That’s exactly what I’ve been doing here @rancholapuerta - I surprised myself by not taking many fitness classes (except for my beloved barre) and instead utilizing the stretching classes. I took every mobilisation, releasing, stretch, and recovery class that I could as well as having a massage to give my body and mind some down time. It’s amazing how therapist myofascial release is.

But that’s not to say I went totally easy- I also ran 20 miles whilst I was here on the trails, treadmill and running track.

I love the treadmill sometimes...it allows me to run even if it’s dark and I’m too scared to run outside, when it’s too hot/cold/icy or you really want to hit certain paces. I’m even upgrading my own treadmill when we move house this summer!

I had 10 miles on my plan with a fast finish and given the heat, hills and trails here at the beautiful @rancholapuerta I knew it wouldn’t happen outside. So I downloaded @lindseyhein626’s latest podcast and started running - luckily I also had @trackclubbabe and @tunderface for company on the treads.

I had a lot of comments after my 10 miler about how to cope with boredom on long treadmill runs so I thought I’d share my top 3 tips:
👌🏻Cover up the time/distance with a towel to stop yourself staring at it the whole time. Willing the time on will not move it any faster.
👌🏻Download a tv series, film, audiobook or podcast to keep you entertained.
👌🏻Mix up the speeds and inclines if you’re not trying to hit specific paces, breaking the run into shorter intervals make it seem to fly by. Otherwise just focus on WHY you’re training and the end goal 👊🏻👊🏻👊🏻⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Get to know me... 😊I used to love making bracelets and necklaces when I was younger but haven’t done it for years. I really enjoyed having the opportunity to go to a free jewelry making class here @rancholapuerta and make a bracelet to take home.

My mum messaged me to tell me I hadn’t explained enough about the ranch on here so let me tell you a little more... Rancho La Puerta is a fitness spa and resort in Mexico, just south of San Diego. They have classes that you can join from 6am-5pm daily, everything from running and tennis, to weights, yoga and meditation. Alongside their classes are talks by painters, dietitians, astrologers plus concerts by musicians. It really is a wholistic approach to wellness and I’m trying to make the most of it before I return to the realities of buying a house, studying for an exam and work.

Cadence... have you ever thought about how many steps you take per minute when you’re running? I hadn’t until today’s running clinic at @rancholapuerta with @tunderface

We should be aiming for 180 steps per minute (or higher) to avoid overstriding and help prevent injury. It should also make your running more effortless, improve speed and form!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
👉🏻Use tour easy runs to really focus on your steps per minute. Use your watch (my Garmin has the option to add cadence as a field on the data screen, plus you can go back through your old run history!) mine came with an average of between 167-170 which I was very pleased with, but there’s still work to be done.

👉🏻If your watch doesn’t count, you can do it manually or get something that goes into your shoe to count your cadence. You’re looking for 90 steps per foot over 1 minute.

3 misty miles this morning testing out the @runwestin offering. I love it when hotels have suggested running routes available however I had thought they’d give you a 3 mile route, or options for longer/shorter but we were actually just advised to walk to the water and run along the path.

Speedwork makes the dreamwork. I get so many DMs (which I ❤️) about how to run faster, and how I’ve knocked 70 minutes off my marathon time... and speedwork has been key for my improvement.

I do a weekly speed session during marathon training which has helped me improve my fitness, increase cadence and got my body (and mind!) used to running FASTER!

You don’t need to have access to a track, any straight flat stretch works or a treadmill! No reason not to get those workouts in!

8 x 400m with 200m walking recoveries - hit all the repeats in 6.05-6.15 min mile pace (between 91 and 96 seconds for 400m). Burnout 🔥 When you’re tired all the time. Have lost motivation and are struggling to commit. I felt like I’d lost my passion for running and for blogging. I let the negative comments, the stress and pressure of Instagram get on top of me.

When you’re told that you are ‘just sharing your anxiety for the likes’ or that you’ll never be fast enough to BQ...you can go one of two ways. Let it become too much and retreat or fight back and prove yourself. I’ve done a little of both recently...

🔥ditching the negativity & realizing that not everything is my fault
🔥meditating - not in a traditional sense but just taking time to appreciate everything around me, turning off the screens and focusing on my breath
🔥 getting outside. Exploring local parks, beaches and countryside. Being by the water is my happy place
🔥 prioritizing which work, runs, social occasions are the most important to me to ditch some of the others and stop becoming so overwhelmed.
🔥 cutting the crap. When I eat badly, it makes me feel rubbish. I’m switching some of my coffees to @pukkaherbs Matcha for an energy boost without a coffee crash, and have focused on eating a more pescatarian and veg filled diet recently.

We got the JEEP! For those following along on my insta stories yesterday, you’ll know that they laughed at us for picking a truck for our Cali part of the trip and suggested we look at the Jeep. Anna and I took one look at it and fell in ❤️. Yassss I finally feel like me again this week! I’m LOVING running after a couple of weeks of letting my anxiety ruin it, not having the confidence or strength to push myself or believe in my ability to BQ in Sept.

A year on from the Grenfell tragedy, this morning I ran in memory of all those who died, all those who continue to suffer and struggle and those for whom life post Grenfell will never be the same.

I was pumped to run this morning after a great couple of miles last night. I have been struggling with anxiety and burnout recently where I was struggling to concentrate or achieve anything. But I feel like after a few days ‘off’, I am back!!!

If you really want to do something, you'll find a way. If not, you'll find an excuse.

How do you fit it all in? A question I was asked numerous times while I was on placement, working full time in a hospital, commuting, blogging and marathon training. The truth is, I don't always succeed but I do my best, and that's all we can ask for. But here are my top tips;
➡️Get up earlier. If you're a morning runner, then getting up a little earlier to squeeze your run in before the rest of the world wakes for the day is ideal. Summer makes that slightly easier with the beautiful early morning light.
➡️Be more efficient. I used my commute time on the train to eat breakfast and respond to blog emails (or to write blogs). I also used my Mum's 5 minute rule...if I had a 5 minutes spare, I would tick off a job, such as paying my parking ticket eek, rather than letting all those little jobs build up.
➡️Prepare ahead, making breakfast, setting up the coffee machine and having my clothes set out really sped things up in the morning.
➡️Find a workout nearby, I found that switching my workout classes to F45 in Paddington helped as I would commute outside of rush hour and either go to a class just before or just after work.
➡️Adapt your training plans. Perhaps with your busy life, a 6 runs a week plan doesn't work for you, so switching to a 3/4 day running, with shorter gym session or other cross training might be more reasonable and achievable.

The Malawi Impact Half marathon- the hardest race I’ve ever taken part in, but also one of the best. I can’t stop talking about what an incredible week we had. We were there to make an impact on the local community, but the impact that the trip and the race had on me, was far greater than I could have imagined. I watched Darkest Hour on the plane last night and it finished on this iconic quote that stuck with me. I’m going through some anxiety at the moment and the negative thoughts are getting to me ahead of my Boston Qualifier attempt in Sept. I feel so far away from the pace and fitness I need to be at, but I’m reminded that I am strong enough to TRY. I’m courageous enough to put my goal out there and go after it with everything I have. I’ve failed before but I’ve picked myself up and tried again. I will not stop fighting for this big goal of mine.

Global Running Day. When did you first think of yourself as a runner? I honestly can’t remember the day but it took a long time to admit it and I still sometimes struggle to think of myself as a real runner, especially after tough runs. I certainly haven’t always been a runner- I recall dreading the 1500m at school as it was felt so far! In fact, when I first started running, I genuinely paid a personal trainer to run with me until I made it to 3 miles because I seriously didn’t even know how to start...

I’ve come a long way in the last 7 years and I still have a long way to go...but from the minute I put in those trainers, whether I knew it or not, I became a runner. I love sightseeing running tours of a new city. I hit the roads this morning with @gorunningtours in Tampa to explore and learn about the history of Tampa Bay. Highly recommend it if you’re in the area (or going anywhere with their own sightseeing running tours) it was great to get insider knowledge of the city, running routes, coffee spots and restaurants. Anxiety isn’t predictable. It doesn’t know that it’s not supposed to rear it’s ugly head at Disney, or on holiday (in fact, that’s often when I suffer most). There isn’t a look, or a single trigger. Anyone you know could be suffering right now.

Yesterday I shared that my anxiety makes me not only tearful, panicked but also angry, grumpy, irrational and irritable at times. I felt really ashamed to admit it, that I can turn into a 🐄 but you guys let me know that I’m not alone, that it’s a common reaction/response and that we just do the best we can to deal with each emotion and situation as it arises. Yesterday’s race was Candy themed, but all I wanted was watermelon after finishing 🍉! So delicious!

After getting a bit red during my 10 miler (should have reapplied my sun cream halfway due to the excessive sweating!) I can fully prepared for the 5K, with sunscreen and Soleve sunburn relief just Incase. Oh an my trusty @aftershokzuk - what’s top of your list to bring with you to a race?

23.59 for my 5K this morning was good enough for 2nd place AG! I started pretty far back in the pack and so was playing catch up for most of the race which gave me a fun target. This is what I was talking about when it comes to sweat! 😅 10 super sweaty miles around the trails of Conservation Park in Panama City Beach (about a 20 min drive from our hotel). Met the lovely @coachkaren30a in the carpark who I joined for the first 5 miles and chatted all things marathon and Ironman, then a final 5 mile solo loop.

Morning miles... I had hill repeats on the plan this morning but my legs weren’t quite ready for them yet, so I swapped my training around for the week and did 3.5 easy miles to start the day with @jersey_girl08.

Know yourself as a runner... 🤔the one thing I would have changed from my trip with @impactmarathon is I would have just signed up for the half marathon. It was overambitoous of me to think I could do the full this close to London and Paris, and I allowed myself to get swept up in the excitement. Just because someone else is able to do multiple marathons/ultras/tough mudders, does not mean that you should!

Marathons are a big deal for me (and my body/mind!) I’m not one of those people who can run 26.2 or more every weekend or who takes ultra marathons in their stride. I need the build up, specific training and a taper - hoeing a field and building a school are not usually part of my taper!! So my next impact marathon race will be a half - just got to work out if it will be Kenya, Guatemala or Nepal!

I was talking about potentially dropping down to the half marathon, and worrying about how ready I was to do a 26.2. And after speaking to - he told me I needed to stop the negative talk and be ALL IN for the marathon, if i started thinking that I couldn’t do it, then I probably wouldn’t be able to do it.

So I’m changing that attitude and giving the Malawi @impactmarathon my best tomorrow - although the time on the clock is irrelevant, it’s all about the experience!
